A Newsie at Heart

A newsie at heart? Is she talking about the news junkies and reporters who are constantly tweeting and talking politics? Or is she referring to the Broadway production of Newsies?

Well, it’s a little bit of both.

I went to New York with my sister last week, and the obvious thing to do was to go see a show on Broadway. We thought long and hard on what to go see. Should we see the Phantom of the Opera? Evita? Mamma Mia? And then we saw it: Newsies! It was perfect! The choreography had won a Tony Award in 2012, the singing was rumoured to be out of this world, and it had to do with the newspaper business.

Plus, one of the characters was a journalist named Katherine. I felt like this show was quite literally calling to me.

It was amazing. For those of you who don’t know the storyline, Newsies is about the New York City newsboy strike of 1899. When these young boys realize the big newspaper corporations are exploiting them and decide to take a stand. In the mix is a young woman (coincidentally the daughter of the business tycoon), who writes about their plight, transforming the newsboy cause into one of importance.

Besides the awesome music and the impressive dancing, the character of Katherine gave me inspiration. Here was a woman from 1899 who wrangled her way into writing for a newspaper on an issue that had been banned throughout the city. Let’s not forget that a woman reporter was practically unheard of as well.

I left the theatre thinking, well if she can do it, I can. When I got back to Ottawa, I decided that I needed to be more actively involved in journalism. I may write stories for the Canadian University Press, but when was the last time I pitched a story? Why am I letting rejection stop me from trying anyway? How can I get my thoughts out into the public eye?

All of this went through my mind, and I came to the conclusion that I should create a blog so that I can get my thoughts out there. Who needs an actual newspaper nowadays. I am Katherine from the Newsies, and what I write can make a difference.

Yes, I just admitted that a musical encouraged me to make this blog … but I don’t care! Inspiration can hit us at any time, and I am not ashamed to say that mine was based off a fictional character who tap dances.

I hope you all enjoy my blog, DeClerq Media. I will be posting my published articles, as well as writing about my observations/comments on the news of the day. Keep an eye out for video and audio content as well, because I am “Seizing the Day” and will succeed!
