My name is Katherine DeClerq and I am the Managing Editor of Women’s Post as well as a freelance journalist in Toronto, Ont.
I didn’t start actively writing until my first year at university. Wide-eyed and ready to delve into the world of journalism, I joined the Fulcrum Newspaper, the student English-language newspaper at the University of Ottawa. I became staff writer in my second year and then continued with the paper as news editor, and finally sports editor. I’ve been lucky enough to get two internships, one with Maclean’s Magazine and another with CTVnews.ca. In both cases I pitched ideas at weekly or daily story meetings, wrote for web and print, and learned more about the publishing industry.
While completing my Master’s of Journalism at Ryerson University, I held a contract with the Toronto Star working in the Radio Room, listening to police scanners and writing breaking news. After graduation, I did some freelance work with BlogTO and culturetrip.com before acquiring a position with Women’s Post.
When I’m not writing, I’m reading, travelling, yoga-ing, or binging television shows on Netflix. I can often be found in a coffee shop with my Macbook computer.
